Steve Finnesand, owner of Finnesand Welding, and fellow welder Shane Braaten combined their skills with those of Sisseton High School art teacher Tonya Holter to create a huge buffalo sculpture they’ve named Sacrifice. The collaboration started with a much smaller art project.

City of Sisseton Ward 1 voters will have two candidates from which to choose at the City Election on Tuesday, June 30. Incumbent Lee Solberg will face challenger Brittany Appel. The Sisseton Courier asked the candidates to complete a questionnaire to help the community get to know them better. The SD Department of Transportation will be closing the northbound on and off ramps of Interstate 29 (I-29) Exit 242 (County Road 23) from Wed, June 17 - July 1.
The contractor will be reconstructing the I-29 northbound lane through the exit during that time frame.
I-29 Exit 246 (New Effington) northbound on and off ramps opened to traffic on June 15.
Work on the project includes overlaying the existing pavement and improving bridge deck and guardrails.

his year’s board vacancies included three positions for three year terms and one position for a two year term. The odd two year term was due to a school board member leaving the board before their term was complete.
School board members with expired terms were Cory Deutsch, Sara Johnson and Lenny Wegener (3-year term) and the vacant 2-year term.
PARK EQUIPMENT NOW OPEN FOR PLAY--Sisseton City Council has now opened up the playground equipment in the city parks for children to get outside and play. The decision was made at Monday (June 8) night’s meeting held at City Hall. The gazebos, picnic shelters and restrooms will remain closed until further notice. Previously the city had put up orange snow fencing around the equipment to discourage families from utilizing the parks due to CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. Families and children and are still reminded to be cautious and stay home if you feel sick.
On Monday, June 8, the Ministerial Association held a prayer service in Anderson Park to denounce racism as a sin and pray for justice and God’s will to be done. Multiple pastors, police officers and families joined in prayer. We followed this with joining in a collaborative art project for healing. To a painting of many colored arms and hands will be added the words “We are” and then blue slips of paper that express people’s responses to this prompt.
