Sheriff’s Dept. provides municipal law enforcement

by Mimi Larsen Courier Staff Writer On Aug. 1, 2022 the Roberts County Sheriff’s Department began providing police services for the towns of Rosholt and New Effington. At least three other municipalities in the county have expressed similar interest.

These contracts are a win- win between the municipalities and the county. The county needs more deputies, but increasing staff puts a strain on the county budget. The cost of maintaining a qualified city police officer is no longer feasible, with the need for outfitting, training, supplying, paying salary, supervising, and providing benefits, as well as a patrol car.

As part of the plan, deputies are voluntarily relocating their residences around the county. As of Sept. 1, two deputies will be living in the northeast corner of the county. While they provide patrol in nearby municipalities, at the expense of the town, they are also well- placed to respond quickly to any emergency calls within the quadrant they are serving.
