Lightning Strike in Town

A severe thunderstorm hit Sisseton in the late afternoon of Friday, Aug. 21. Producing only a quarter inch of rain, the storm was accompanied by intense lightning. Pictured above is what remains of what was once a 100 foot pine tree next to Wes Herniman’s house on 6th Ave. E. The tree was struck by lightning around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, splitting the upper part of the tree in two and taking off the top 40 feet or so. About 10 feet of debris was scattered around the neighborhood, while 30 feet was on the ground by the house. The same storm also produced hail around some parts of the area, and even a tornado touchdown at Roy Lake in the hills west of Sisseton. ~ Courier Photo
