38 SHS seniors to graduate May 16

Thirty-eight seniors will complete their four years of education at Sisseton High School with Commencement Services at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Sisseton Athletic Complex.

Graduation speakers will be Jaylona Hull and Sheridan Swanson, members of the graduating class.

The Class of 2020 chose the white lily as their class flower, and their class colors are red, black and silver. The class song is “Time of Our Lives” by Tyrone Wells, and the class motto is “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” by Dr. Seuss.

Wambdi boys basketball coach and athletes awarded end of season honors

Wambdi athletes Jamison Pratt and Caleb White were selected for the South Dakota Class A All-State boys basketball team.

Jamison Pratt, 5-11 Senior, earned second team honors. He had an average of 22 points with 11 rebounds per game. Jamison also had the honor of having achieved membership in the TZTS 1,000 Point Club.

Caleb White, 5-11 senior, made the third team. He had an average of 20 points with 5 rebounds and 6 assists per game.

The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association selected Mike Carlson as Region 1 Head Boys Coach of the Year.

SHS students work with theatre artist

Sisseton High School juniors and seniors spent the week of Mar. 9-13 working with theatre artist Fran Sillau as part of the Schools and Communities program.

Sillau helped the students explore characters in plays they had recently read by using improvisation, creating scenes that were not in the original play, writing monologues for characters and reenacting actual scenes from the play.

Plays that were used were Macbeth, Pygmalion, and Raisin in the Sun. Teachers involved were Amanda Nordquist and Sharon Prendergast.

Halseide named Athlete of the Week

Tiospa Zina’s Payton Halseide was named Athlete of the Week by the Watertown Public Opinion last week.

The 5-foot-10 senior guard helped the Tiospa Zina High School boys basketball team defeat Pine Ridge 64-55 in their Class A SoDak 16 playoff game. Halseide scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

High School Tournaments, Competitions postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19

At the request of Gov. Kristi Noem, the remainder of the SDHSAA Class B Girls Basketball tournament was postponed as of Friday, Mar. 13. In addition, all SDHSAA state basketball tournaments for next weekend, along with the Visual Arts competition, are also postponed. The Student Council Convention, all Region music contests, and All-State Band scheduled for later this month are cancelled.

Tiospa Zina ends Sisseton’s season

The Tiospa Zina Wambdi ended the season for the Sisseton Redmen boys basketball team with a 58-45 victory over the Redmen to move on to the SoDak 16, which will be held in Pierre on Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2020. The Tiospa Zina Wambdi will play the Pine Ridge Thorpes at 7:30 p.m.

Sisseton Girls end season with loss to Redfield

The third seeded Sisseton Redmen Girls Basketball Team’s season has come to an end with a second round Region playoff loss to the second seeded Redfield Pheasants, 45-49, on Thursday, Mar. 5, in Redfield.

The fifth seeded Sisseton Redmen Boys Basketball Team upset the fourth seed Webster Bearcats in the first round of the Region playoffs on Tuesday, Mar. 3, at the Webster Armory.

Sisseton Girls move to second round of Region playoffs

The Sisseton Redmen Girls Basketball Team scored a victory over the Milbank Bulldogs 51-37 in the first round of the Region playoffs on Monday, Mar. 2, at Ben Reifel Gym in Sisseton.

Sisseton Boys fall to Groton Area

The Sisseton Redmen Boys Basketball Team lost another close game in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, falling to the Groton Area Tigers 43-48 at Ben Reifel Gym in Sisseton on Friday, Feb. 28, to close out the regular season.
