Croymans appointed interim police chief

    During a special meeting on Monday, Apr. 28, 2008, the Sisseton City Council appointed Jim Croymans as the interim Chief of Police for the Sisseton Police Department.
    Croymans, who previously served as a Roberts County Deputy Sheriff, was serving as an investigator in the Roberts County States Attorney’s Office. He resigned that position to accept the interim position as Chief of Police.
    Croymans remains a candidate for the position of Robert County Sheriff. He and current Sheriff Vince Owen are on the ballot for the Primary Election to determine the Democratic candidate. The winner of the June 3 election will face Republican Chad Broz in the General Election in November.


Community gears up for “Spring Sweep” activities

    Sisseton’s “Spring Sweep” campaign kicks off this week as area residents make plans start spring cleaning their own homes and yards, as well as the whole community. Through the Sisseton Horizons Project, homes, streets, public places and businesses will be improved through a coordinated six-week clean-up campaign. This week, local businesses will receive a free broom from the Horizons committee to promote the “Spring Sweep” activities and to encourage business owners and their employees to get involved in the clean-up events that are planned.
    Brooms and rakes for cleaning will be also be available for just $2.00 each through the A&C True Value Store. (The remainder of the cost for the brooms and rakes will be paid for by the Horizons committee.)
    COMMUNITY CLEAN-UPNIGHTS
    Volunteers of all ages are asked to meet at Anderson Park at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 to walk the streets and park areas of Sisseton picking up trash and cleaning up our community. Volunteers may come one night, or both. On the first night, volunteers will walk the east-west streets and pick up trash from the streets and boulevards. On the second night, volunteers will cover the north-south streets. Volunteers in Agency Village will also be cleaning up their community at the same time.
    Dakota Western Corporation has donated bio-degradable trash bags for both community clean-up efforts. Latex gloves will be provided for everyone helping with the clean-up. When they return their bags full of trash, volunteers will receive a coupon for a hamburger and a drink at one of Sisseton’s local restaurants.
    Cleaning Up Your Personal Space
    As area residents sort through their personal “clutter,” items no longer needed or used can go to one of three places:
    1. By your driveway or on the boulevard. Sisseton City crews will be picking up extra items left on the boulevards Monday through Wednesday, May 5-7 and May 12-14.
    The Sisseton Wahpeton Housing Authority (SWHA) will pick up items from the Sisseton and Buddy Nelson sites May 2 and 5; from the Crawfordsville site May 12 and 13; and from the Old Agency site May 15 and 16.
    2. To the Community Spring Swap. This Community Recycling of Useable Discards (CRUD) is continuing during the next two weekends in May at the Sisseton Swimming Pool Building. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on May 10-11 and May 17-18, volunteers will be available at the pool building to answer questions and determine placement of items. When you bring an item, you can claim an item. On the weekend of May 17-18 items will continue to be accepted, PLUS anyone may come and take items they want and/or need.Items that will be accepted include: new building materials, plumbing fixtures and supplies, household items, and any USEABLE items. (NO clothing or shoes will be accepted.)
    3. At your rummage sale held in conjunction with the City Wide Treasures and Bargains Sale on Saturday, June 7. This event is sponsored by the Sisseton Area Chamber of Commerce.
    OTHER “SPRING SWEEP” ACTIVITIES
    The six-week “Spring Sweep” will also include a “Graffiti Combat Plan” that will be developed for our community.
    Another goal of the “Spring Sweep” is to promote positive attitudes and community pride.The Sisseton Spring Sweep campaign was developed as a result of the Horizons Project that community leaders have been involved with for the past year.

Commissioners appoint Horton to fill vacant seat on board

    Roberts County Commissioners voted unanimously to appoint Bobby Horton to serve as a District 3 commissioner, replacing Kenny Buck, during their regular meeting on Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2008. Buck had resigned his position last month.
    The commissioners also reviewed a rough draft of a purchase agreement proposal between the Roberts County Commission and Grant-Roberts Ambulance Service, Inc. The ambulance service would like to purchase property currently owned by the county to build a three stall vehicle garage with sleeping quarters. According to the purchase agreement, the property would sell for $17,500.
