Redmen lose opener to the Cossacks
The Sisseton Redmen football team lost its home opener on Friday, Aug. 23, 2016 to the Sioux Valley Cossacks 20-8 in a I-29 Conference football game.
Daymein Lucas hit Nick Strasburg on an 11 yard touchdown pass to open up the scoring for Sioux Valley with 3:23 left to the first quarter. Dalton Hanson put Sioux Valley on the scoreboard again with a one yard plunge with 1:42 left before half-time. Sioux Valley led 13-0 at half-time. In the fourth quarter, Lucas hit Cole Gross for a 25 yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring for the Cossacks leading 20-0.
Colbey Lehrke got a touchdown for the Redmen in the fourth quarter on a 23 yard scamper with a two point conversion good from Hunter Medenwald to Benji Thompson.
Justin Brockel led the Redmen on rushing with 14 carries for 76 yards. Lehrke added 58 yards on 12 carries.
Noah Puetz carried the ball 16 times for the Cossacks for 76 yards. Dalton Hanson rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries and Matt Larson chipped in with nine carries for 21 yards.
Lucas added 41 yards passing going 4-6. Cole Gross caught one pass for 25 yards.
Justin Brockel had 22 tackles to lead the Redmen defense. John Toelle added 16 tackles. Benji Thompson chipped in with 15 tackles and Josh Currence added nine.
Matt Larson lead the way for the Cossacks with 11 tackles.
