WegletitnerAgnes Wegleitner
The Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes Wegleitner was 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Lake City, SD. Rev. Fr. Albert Cizewski celebrated the mass with burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Visitation was 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the church.
Agnes passed away Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Avera-Sr. James Care Center in Yankton, SD, at the age of 95.
Agnes Eleanor Tucken-hagen was born July 30, 1915, to Richard and Ida (Moline) Tuckenhagen in Waverly, MN. As a youngster, she attended school in McKinley Township. After receiving her education she stayed on the family farm for two years and farmed with her father. He had been in poor health since an early age resulting from a dynamite explosion at the Johnson Mine in 1898. She also did housework in many area homes.
On July 7, 1934, she married John Frank Wegleitner in St. Paul, MN. She became an instant mother to his five young children. Agnes often talked about how she immediately felt a deep love for those children and considered them her own. Agnes and John had one child of their own, John Richard Wegleitner, who was deeply loved and adored by his mother.
In 1942 Agnes went to work for the Great Northern Railroad repair shop and also drove bus for the South St. Paul Transit Company. In 1946, with sons, John, Irvin and Jerome, they moved to a farm near Lake City, SD. Eventually Jerome and Irvin returned to Minnesota, but Agnes and her husband continued to farm with their son, John.
Agnes retired from farming in 1960 and then worked a variety of jobs. She worked for three years for Sue Bee Honey, then in the poultry department at Landsberger’s Creamery. In 1979 Agnes began working for Dakotah Industries making quilts. She also continued to help her son John on his farm and in his butcher shop.
Her husband passed away on October 27, 1994, and Agnes continued to make her home on the farm. Shortly after his death, Agnes was involved in a serious auto accident in Breckenridge, MN. She remained hospitalized for a few months following the accident.
In January of 1999 Agnes moved to Yankton, SD to be near her granddaughter, Debora Muilenberg. Agnes loved being around children. Where there were children, you were sure to find Agnes. She enjoyed putting puzzles together, crocheting, knitting, quilting and sewing. Agnes had a contagious smile and a kind, caring personality. Much of her life was devoted to helping others, always thinking of her loved ones first and herself last. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters: Eleanor Johnson of Richfield, MN; Alice (Milton) Saunders of Rush City, MN; a sister, Elsie (Ellsworth) Borg of Waverly, MN; and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her more than any words could ever express.
Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers, two sisters, her husband and three sons.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton. An online guestbook and obituary are available at www.pricefuneralchapel.net.
